Artful Embodiment · Michelle Hess, M.A.

Body-centered workshops and creative practice for midlife women who are tired of holding it all together.

If you're the capable one who runs everything and rarely gets a turn, this is a place to slow down and listen inward. We do it through painting, movement, and ritual.

You can understand your patterns inside out and still feel them in your body. That's where we start.

Not ready to join anything? Come to one live gathering and see what it's like. You pay what works for you, and you don't have to be a member. No talent or experience required, just a willingness to be open and play. Nobody critiques what you make.

$25 is the suggested amount: give more if it's easy, less if it's not.

Why paint?

Paint can reach what talking can't

Images can hold more than words can. When words fail you, working with color and symbol gets to the parts of you that thinking about it never does. Our culture teaches us emotional MISmanagement, and this is a gentler way to unlearn it.

Women come to our sessions to:

What women say

"My first thought was to decline when you sent the invite because it felt too scary and time consuming, but I'm so glad I did it. It was so good to connect with that part of me."

"Taking this class was very impactful for me because I don't see myself as an artist. I felt completely supported and seen by Michelle. Her energy is calm and encouraging and I'm still carrying the High Priestess with me!!"

About

For the one who holds it all together

If you've spent years being the capable one, the one who remembers everything and says yes before checking in with yourself, you probably know a lot about why you do it. You may still feel it in your body every day, in the tiredness that sleep doesn't touch.

I know that from the inside. I grew up judged on performance, and I was a competitive athlete who lived in my head more than my body. After surgery for a tumor in my spinal cord, I had to tape a pencil to my hand to learn to draw and write again. Sitting there, I realized there was no way I could be "perfect again," even if I tried.

I never thought of myself as an artist. I was over 49 when I took my first painting and figure drawing classes, and it took me about two years to believe my teachers when they said I was one. If you've ever told yourself you're not the creative type, you're in good company. The paint made it possible to quiet my mind and let my body wisdom speak, and it gave me back the part of me that remembers how to make a mess without asking if it's good enough. Now I use my lack of dexterity to my advantage, because it gets me out of my head and into my right brain.

When we work together, you learn to remove the need to prove yourself as your inner motivation.

Working with me is gentle and unhurried, and you set the pace. There's no version of this where you're doing it wrong. I'm Michelle Hess, MA, RYT, CPC: poet, mixed media artist, subtle body coach, embodiment mentor, and yoga teacher.
